Home Page 404 Error on WordPress Sites

w3_total_cache_iconAfter the recent upgrade of a plugin called W3 Total Cache, version 0.9.4, all of our sites using this plugin experienced intermittent 404 page not found errors for the home page.  Intermittent means the Home pages loaded from some browsers occasionally, but on reloading the Home could not be found. The 404 errors disappeared when I deactivated the W3 Total Cache plugin. As an alternative Quickcache is simpler to set up and provides improvement equivalent to W3 Total Cache.According to the W3 Total Cache publishers, their plugin is…

The only WordPress Performance Optimization (WPO) framework; designed to improve user experience and page speed.

My own experience with this plugin is that it is complex to set up, and can slightly slow loading times on fast sites according to my tests with webpagetest.org.   If your site is loading slowly, and you feel that caching all over the universe will help with your users’ experience than you should test this plugin, however I found very minimal improvement on those sites and definitely not worth the headache and labor of setting up and maintaining this plugin.  Their logo is a roll of dice and that is what you may get for improvement with this plugin.
